PreStar
The PreStar program is suitable for skaters who have completed Stage 4 of the CanSkate program through a Skate Canada Club, have equivalent skating skills or on coach recommendation and are interested in pursuing figure skating as a sport. This program is a bridge program between CanSkate & StarSkate. Skaters will work on completing Stage 5 & 6 of the CanSkate program
The PreStar program introduces skaters to the structure and environment of a StarSkate program, while continuing to build on the advanced skills taught in CanSkate. Skaters begin to learn more figure-skating specific elements in a small group settings and gradually adapt to being on the ice with other STAR level skaters.
Membership requirement is 1 day, however, we recommend skaters register for a minimum of 2 sessions for best results and progress

Equipment & Attire
SKATES Figure skates must be worn in our PreStar program. It is important that skaters have good quality equipment. Better quality boots and blades will provide the needed support as your skater advances and it will help prevent injury.
We highly recommend purchasing figure skates from one of the skate retailers listed below.
Skates should be sharpened every 30-40 hours of skating.
ATTIRE Skaters should wear warm layers- we know the rink is cold!
Hair should be tied back and away from their face and consider a hat or headband.
Mitts, leggings / athletic pants with tights underneath or a figure skating dress/skirt should be worn for females and warm layers for males. Loose fitting pants (sweatpants) and jeans will not be permitted.
Skaters should not wear JEANS, BAGGY CLOTHING, HOODIES
HELMETS CSA approved helmets must be worn until a skater completes Stage 5 of the CanSkate program as per Skate Canada. Parents will receive notification when their skater is ready to take off their helmet.

Junior Star
Skaters must have completed CanSkate Stage 6, have equivalent skating skills, or on coach recommendation. This program is for skaters who are interested in continuing figure skating.
** Membership requirement is 1 day, however, we recommend skaters register for a minimum of 2 sessions for best results and progress. **
Program Overview
The Star 1-5 program offers the best-in-class figure skating curriculum in Canada, targeting athletes looking for a future in the sport. Taught by NCCP Skate Canada coaches, the program introduces skaters to the basic figure skating elements to create the foundation for future skating.
Skaters now have the ability to be assessed through a standardized testing system. StarSkate is not a badge program. Skaters also have the opportunity to start attending competitions at the Junior Star level.
The Star program is an opportunity for personal growth and the development of important life skills such as goal-setting, self-discipline, time management, healthy lifestyle and coping strategies to deal with both successes and failures.
The STAR program focuses 4 disciplines:
Skills a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and in isolation. The objective of skills is the mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating - edge quality, control, power and speed.
Dance teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure, as well as the basic skating skills like edges, flow and control. Dances are skated to prescribed steps on patterns to music.
Freeskate the execution of spins jumps, field movements, stroking and footwork. Each assessment has two parts: Elements & Free Program (solo)
Artistic (Star 5+) uses skater creativity, expression, musicality, movement and interpretation of music as well as used of space, rhythm, line and style. Skaters must skate and interpret the piece of music.

Assessments
Throughout the season, skaters will be assessed on their progress once a club coach determines they are ready. Our program coordinator will email you ahead of time with the information about the date and what assessment your skater is testing. Testing will take place on your skaters regular scheduled session.
Assessments are $15 per assessment and must be paid prior your skaters assessment date.

Lessons & Coaching
Coaches are not permitted to solicit parents or skaters for private lessons according to Skate Canada's Coaches Code of Ethics. Parents and coaches enter into a private agreement which may be ended at the discretion of the coach or parent. It is often best to choose a coach for the season and then re-evaluate your needs at the end of the year. You may have more than one coach to work on the different disciplines in skating.
Parents and coaches work together to decide what their goals are for their child and how many lessons they wish to have per week to fit their budget and desires. Y You can expect your coach to communicate with you regularly about how your child is progressing and what tests they will be ready to try and when. It is the skater’s responsibility to inform their coach of an absence from a lesson or you may be charged for that missed lesson.
Every coach differs in style and philosophy, and it’s important for parents to make an informed choice on behalf of their skater. Parents know their child best! Be sure to give some thought to your skater’s learning style and personality, and then talk to a few coaches -- in addition to other skaters or parents -- to determine which coach would be the best fit for your skater. Ask your skater who they like working with on the ice
Cost
Coaches are self-employed and set their own hours and fees. Coaches rates will vary based on qualifications and experience. On average you can expect to pay anywhere from $9.00 - $15.00 for a 15 minute private lesson.
Coaches invoice parents directly. Rates will vary if there is more than one person in the group (semi private or group instruction) and length of the lesson (10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes or more). You can always reach out to coaches about their fees at any time.
A valued part of our club, Skate Canada Orangeville relies on our StarSkaters to volunteer as Program Assistants (PA) for our PreCanSkate and CanSkate programs. This is an important part of our club programming and provides a meaningful opportunity for skaters to give back, develop leadership skills, and support the next generation of skaters.
INTERMEDIATE REQUIREMENTS
Every skater who registers for Intermediate in the 2026-2027 season is required to register as a volunteer Program Assistant (PA)* for:

One 9-week or 10-week PreCanskate program, and
-
One additional 5-week, 9-week, or 10-week program. (10-week program preferred)
This two-program requirement may be fulfilled either consecutively or concurrently. We encourage additional sessions when possible. Serving as a PA not only strengthens our CanSkate sessions, but also helps build a strong, connected club community.
PA program registration is available on a first-come-first-served basis once registration opens. You may join the waitlist if your preferred PA program is full, but you must also register for an alternate program in case space does not open up.
