A rhythm from either group 1 or 2 may be repeated once. Selection of a rhythm from group 2 is not required, but only one rhythm may be chosen from this group.

• Contain combinations of new or know dance steps/ movements including required elements and step sequences and personal ideas of the couple in concept, arrangement and expression
• Choreography should reflect character, accents and nuances of music, demonstrate change of pace and variations in speed and tempo and utilize the whole ice surface
• Must not look like pair skating or exhibition dance

Music

• Vocal permitted
• Only music with a rhythmic beat, must skate to the rhythmic beat and not to the melody alone
• Two or three selections of music may be used
• If only 2 rhythms are selected, one may be repeated even if it is a different tune
• Duration of each rhythm should be balanced
• Rhythms should be listed in the order in which they will be skated when registering their music

• Couple must skate primarily in time to the rhythmic beat and not to the melody alone
• A program that displays a change of tempo and well balanced use of melody, rhythmic beat and musical accents and not melody alone is considered higher quality

General steps
& movement

• All steps, turns, rotations and changes of hold permitted if appropriate to each rhythm
• Difficult, original and intricate footwork required for both skaters
• Changes of edge, rockers, choctaws and other such steps and turns, and multi-directional skating, etc. preferred to runs and chasses, posing and one directional skating
• Excessive skating on 2 feet considered inability to skate and should be penalized

  • Small hops, a few toe steps and small jumps of no more than ½ rotation are permitted
  • 1 highlight with 2 feet (max 5 sec.)
  • Kneeling or sliding (2 knees) or full splits, and/or touching the ice with hand(s) allowed if not excessive

• All permitted
• Deep edges, intricate footwork displaying skating skill, difficulty, variety and originality by both
• A program that relies heavily on cross cuts, simple stroking and running, one directional skating, excessive stopping and posing is considered to have insufficient required difficulty, intricacy and variety of linking steps (e.g. threes, Mohawks, Choctaws, rockers, counters, brackets, twizzles, etc.)
• Free skating elements/movements permitted if appropriate to music and well balanced program
• Pair skating elements (excluding spirals, spins and step sequences) not permitted

  • No kneeling on two knees on the ice
  • No skating with a hand (or hands) on ice
  • No lying on the ice

Stops

Max 2 full: (max 5 seconds each) - any choreography during (including separation of not more than 2 arms length apart), may not be in required step sequences
• After the 1st movement, must not remain in one place (even if doing brief extra stops which are permitted) for longer than 10 seconds

• Permitted for 5 seconds each

Unison/Holds

  • to change hold (< 1 measure of music)
  • midline step sequence or permitted stop(s)
  • perform brief side by side skating (< 2 measures)
  • at beginning or end, < 10 seconds

• No pull or push partner by boot and/or leg (may aid by holding foot and/or leg in lift(s), or spin)
• No restrictions on dance holds, arm movements, handclaps, etc., except: brief hand-in-hand positions permitted to express the character of the Charleston rhythm is permitted (if chosen)

• Unison important and all changes of position with varied dance holds
• Emphasis on more difficult holds e.g. face to face harder than hand in hand

  • separations permitted, maximum distance apart 2 arms lengths (maximum 5 seconds, beginning/ end maximum 10 seconds)
  • no standing, sitting or leaning on, or holding partners boots and/or legs (unless 1 skate on ice)

Lifts

• 2 different types of dance lifts, but no more which are appropriate to the chosen music (chosen from the Short Lifts - up to 6 seconds only)

• A full split pose for lifted partner is permitted in only one Short Lift. Another lift in split pose will be demoted to Level 1

Senior: 4 different types of lifts (2 may be chosen from lifts not to exceed 10 seconds)
Junior: 3 different types of lifts (1 may be chosen from lifts not to exceed 10 seconds)

Short Lifts - not to exceed 6 seconds (Stationary, Straight Line, Curve, Rotational)
Long Lifts - not to exceed 10 seconds (Serpentine, Reverse Rotational, Combination)

• A full split pose for lifted partner is permitted in only one Short Lift and/or in one part of a Long Lift. Each additional lift in a split pose will be demoted to Level 1

Note: Combined spins and lifts are permitted but are counted as separate elements

General Restrictions on Lifts Basic free dance rules apply:
• not lifting hand(s) above head
• lifted partner in upside down split pose not permitted
• not acrobatic
• swinging the partner around by hand(s) and/or leg(s), boot(s) and/or skate(s) only; lying, sitting on the partner’s head; sitting or standing on the partner’s shoulder, back or boot; standing on the partner’s leg
• should be performed in an elegant manner without obvious feats of strength and awkward and/or undignified actions and poses

Spin(s)

1 Dance Spin (spin or spin combination), but not more

Note: Combined Spins and Lifts are not permitted

Senior:
• Option 1: 2 Different Dance Spins (Spin and Spin Combination) and 1 Set of Synchronized Twizzles
• Option 2: 1 Dance Spin (Spin or Combination Spin) and 2 Different Sets of Synchronized Twizzles (the 1st twizzle of one set must start with a forward entry edge and the 1st twizzle of the other set must start with a backward entry edge). If the 2nd set of twizzles is started with the same entry edge it will be reduced to Level 1
Junior:
1 Dance Spin Combination Spin

Note: Combined spins and lifts are permitted but are counted as separate elements

Spin Definitions Spin - both partners must complete at least 3 continuous rotations on one foot
Combination Spin - Both partners must complete at least 3 rotations on one foot, followed by a change of foot for both simultaneously and 3 further rotations on the other foot and no more than ½ rotation on 2 feet during the “change of feet”. A change of centre of rotation is not permitted

Step
Sequences

2 Different Step Sequences
• No lifts, spins, jumps of more than ½ revolution, stops or pattern regressions permitted
• Small hops (without rotation) and toe steps are permitted
• Give credit for intricate footwork & edges for both

1. Diagonal
• As fully corner to corner as possible
• Any dance hold is permitted, including Hand-in-Hand

2. Midline (not touching)
• Along long axis as nearly full length as possible
• Difficult mirror and/or matching footwork
• Two sequential twizzles - 2 twizzles on one foot for both skaters skated simultaneously with up to one step in between, no stop(s) are allowed before and/or between twizzles
• Must not touch, must remain as close together as possible and not more than 2 arms length apart

2 step sequences (Senior & Junior)
Choose 2 different types of step sequences out of 6 below (may not be same pattern even if different direction)
• Any type of hold except Hand-in-Hand

(a) Midline: long axis, full length of ice surface
(b) Diagonal: fully corner to corner as possible
(c) Circular anticlockwise: utilize full width on short axis in anticlockwise direction
(d) Serpentine anticlockwise: start anticlockwise at long axis at one end, 3 bold curves (1 clockwise), end at long axis opposite end utilizing full width of ice surface
(e) Circular clockwise: utilize full width on short axis in clockwise direction
(f) Serpentine clockwise: start clockwise at long axis at one end, 3 bold curves (1 anticlockwise), end at long axis opposite end utilizing full width of ice surface

Note: No lifts, jumps, dance spins, stops, pirouettes, pattern retrogression and loops

Synchronized
Twizzles

• In straight line step sequence
(See above)

• Can enter on FO, FI, BI or BO edge
• 2 twizzles each, max 3 small steps between
• Simultaneous with at least one rotation
• Both must skate same number of rotations for each twizzle
• Skaters must travel across the ice during turns
• More twizzles may be added but will not be counted
• No stops are permitted before the 1st or 2nd twizzles
